The Marrakesh Treaty to Facilitate Access to Published Works for Persons Who Are Blind, Visually Impaired, or Otherwise Print Disabled was adopted on June 27, 2013, in Marrakesh. The treaty allows for copyright exceptions to facilitate the creation of accessible versions of books and other copyrighted works for visually impaired persons.
The treaty requires Contracting Parties to adopt national law provisions that permit the reproduction, distribution and making available of published works in accessible formats through limitations and exceptions to the rights of copyright rightholders. It also provides for the cross-border exchange of these accessible format works between organizations serving the beneficiary persons.
The treaty entered into force on September 30, 2016, and has been ratified by numerous countries worldwide, making it easier for people with print disabilities to access published works.
